WEBCAM Liberty 2008 by Edwin Stolk (2 hours 26 minutes 47 seconds)

Video project web cam liberty is a conceptual inquiry on liberty in the 21st century.

The actual video shows a report of Edwin Stolk who decided to lock himself up during Liberation Day, the 5th of may 2008. Liberation Day (Dutch: Bevrijdingsdag) is celebrated each year on May 5th in the Netherlands to mark the end of the German occupation during World War II.

The reason for this performance was and is mainly to create awareness on the subject liberty in general. While times go by young generations are less involved by the historical fact of the brutal World War II, because their parents are from a generation after this war. But the subject liberty is still a very actual issue. I do not only mean for countries who are involved in war right now, but especially liberty related to the Western idea of liberty. I choose this Western way of liberty because of the fact that it is being seen by powerful Western Countries as a kind of superior way of living. Not only to live themselves this so-called liberty but also try to force other countries to believe in this superior idea.

Different media, who pronounce themselves as independent and free, seem not to be that free as you might think. For example, internet is controlled by large players and they can decide what they want you to see or not. Other software like chat programs make it possible to communicate, you could see this as a freedom, but I also experienced that loneliness under wealthy people is rising. In my own contact list there are people online for almost whole day, which means that their contact with other people is based on this chat software possibility.

During my imprisonment in a small room in my house I decided to keep contact with people all over the world by this chat program. I surrounded myself in the structure of wasted materials like I also show in my installations, materials which are collected in my nearby surrounding and mostly from my own consumption. On one side of me there was the laptop with internet connection to people all over the world in there own 'imprisonment' in their search for human contact. Because of the freedom to use more than one application on my laptop I decided to watch porn in my freedom to do so, also to justify a need in my natural self. On the other side there was a television on which I played at the same time VHS video tapes of documentaries, documentaries about the World War II, the Russian revolution but also about pop music artists which supply a freedom to become just as famous as them etc. When the time passes by I decided to change my clothes with old clothes which were there in a bag in my freedom to throw them away.

Unfortunately this action, WebCam Liberty, did not lead to major change in my thinking of Liberty, although it brought up a feeling of human denial. It brought me awareness that life itself isn't liberated in its appearance. That the human body, I mean; body and spirit, are imprisoned in there own thoughts and awareness, which makes freedom, liberty an illusion. (Text by Edwin Stolk)

Het video project WEBCAM Liberty is een conceptueel onderzoek naar de betekenis van vrijheid en bevrijding in de 21ste eeuw. Het uiteindelijke resultaat van het onderzoek is te zien in de video WEBCAM Liberty. Het onderzoek bestond uit een eenzame opsluiting dor Edwin Stolk op 5 mei Bevrijdingsdag 2008. Bevrijdingsdag wordt ieder jaar op 5 mei gehouden er wordt dan stilgestaan bij het einde van de Duitse Bezetting van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

De reden van dit onderzoek en deze performance is hoofdzakelijk bedoeld om inzicht te verkrijgen in het onderwerp vrijheid algemeen. De huidige jongeren cultuur staat verder af van de Tweede Wereldoorlog omdat hun ouders de generatie na de Tweede Wereldoorlog vertegenwoordigen. Maar het onderwerp vrijheid is niet minder actueel naar mijn mening. Hierbij doel ik niet alleen op landen die heden ten dagen in oorlog zijn, maar in het bijzonder de idee van hedendaagse vrijheid in Westerse landen. Ik kies bewust dit deel van het onderwerp vrijheid, omdat grootmachten deze vrijheid superieur achten boven andere vormen in andere landen. Niet alleen om zelf vanuit dit vrijheidsbesef te leven maar ook andere landen, hetzij met of zonder geweld, te overtuigen van dit superieure idee.

Verschillende media, die zichzelf voordoen als onafhankelijk en vrij, lijken lang niet altijd zo vrij te zijn. Bijvoorbeeld Internet is verdeeld in verschillende machtige spelers die bepalen en beïnvloeden wat je op je scherm wel of niet te zien krijgt. Andere software zoals communicatie programma's als chat programma's pretenderen bij te dragen aan vrijheid. Maar kun je spreken van vrijheid wanneer een steeds meer individualistische samenleving zorgt voor eenzaamheid onder de mensen, mensen die vervolgens soms dagelijks online op chat programma's verblijven? Wat betekent dat dit cyber contact voor hen vaak het enige contact met andere mensen is. Gedurende mijn opsluiting in een kleine kamer van mijn huis besloot ik contact te houden met mensen van over de wereld via de Chat. De kamer in mijn huis was gevuld met rest materialen die ik om mij heen heb verzameld, meestal afkomstig uit mijn directe omgeving en onderdeel van mijn eigen consumptie. Aan de ene kant van mij bevond zich een laptop waarop ik contact hield met andere mensen via de Chat, tegelijk bekeek ik porno video's. Het is immers mogelijk de vrijheid te hebben deze menselijke behoefte via het net te bevredigen, tevens de vrijheid te hebben twee applicaties tegelijk te draaien op de pc. Aan de andere kant van mij stond een televisie en video recorder, hierop draaide ik documentaires, onder andere van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, Russische Revolutie maar ook documentaires van popmuziek artiesten etc. Dit als contrast en tijdspad van de informatie die ik tot mij nam via Internet. Tevens kleedde ik mij steeds om met kleding die in een zak aanwezig was in de kamer, kleding die ik eerder heb afgedankt en mij confronteren met tijd en de vergankelijkheid.

WEBCAM Liberty heeft er uiteindelijk niet toe bijgedragen een andere visie te generen op het begrip vrijheid, het onderwerp is subjectief. Je kunt concluderen dat vrijheid iets is wat je kunt inbeelden maar absolute vrijheid lijkt niet te bestaan. Je kunt stellen dat het lichaam, ik doel op lichaam en geest, per definitie gevangen zijn in gedachten en bewustzijn. Dit maakt vrijheid een illusie. (Tekst Edwin Stolk)
