Installation: Q- Fever by Edwin Stolk (21st of June - 13th of July 2008 in Breezand, The Netherlands) is realized at the Exhibition Jong Land as part of Kunstzomer, Anna Paulowna, The Netherlands, and was curated by artist and exhibition maker Arjan Brentjes.

It seems Edwin Stolk wants to create chaos by arranging 'trash'. His installation works may look as if you've entered the brain of a confused young man. But by ordering things intuitively, the artist seeks an subjective reality. (Text by Arjan Brentjes)

Artist statement:

Q-fever is a disease caused by infection that affects both humans and animals. I choose this title because of the fact that as a radical phenomenologist I am interested in the way everything, the living and nonliving, is connected (subjective). It looks like it is human nature to separate themselves from their environment in urge to use science, generate knowledge, to reach a point of understanding about truth and about awareness of our surrounding. The title of the work, and the meaning of the word Q-Fever, shows us our weaknesses in this way of thinking. Animals can give us humans, Q-Fever, which shows us our connection.

The installation: Q-fever is made out of materials from an earlier work (Subjective Terrorism shown at A.P.I, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and brought together with materials, mainly school inventory, on the spot in Breezand. This concept eliminates every form of objective thinking about the earlier work, in order to reach a form of subjectivity, both in Q-Fever as well as the work Subjective Terrorism. The works I make are in general subjective because they deal with the fact that there is no absolute truth. As an artist I approach perception and existence in an ambiguous matter.

The old school location where Q-Fever was built inspired me to research the education system, which theories are told to young children, what is the role of truth and who decides? An interesting detail of the classroom was a peak window in which the teacher could check the children at the toilet, a form of control in my opinion which is representative for nowadays society. Q-Fever especially questioned the subject idealism, from a western point of view. What is the state of idealism nowadays? That's why in the large mural the text appeared, as if the teacher asked the children: "who is going to be the next Western suicide bomber?"

Edwin Stolk lijkt chaos te willen creëren met een boel 'rommel'. De installaties die hij maakt zien eruit alsof je in het hoofd van een verwarde jongeman terecht bent gekomen. Maar door de spullen zonder voorkennis te rangschikken zoekt de kunstenaar naar een subjectieve werkelijkheid. (Tekst: Arjan Brentjes)

Kunstenaarsstatement: Q-koorts is een ziekte die veroorzaakt wordt door een infectie en zowel mensen als dieren kunnen de ziekte krijgen. Ik heb als radicale fenomenoloog voor deze titel gekozen omdat ik geïnteresseerd ben in de manier waarop alles, het levende en niet levende, met elkaar verbonden is (subjectief). Het lijkt erop dat de menselijke natuur ons vraagt afstand te nemen van deze verbinding, om te komen tot wetenschap, kennis, om dat het 'niet weten' ondraaglijk lijkt. De titel van mijn werk en de betekenis van het woord q-fever benadrukt onze verbinding, toont onze zwakte en onvermogen aan in het objectiverende denken.

De installatie: Q-Fever is vervaardigd van materialen uit een eerder werk (Subjective Terrorism tentoongesteld op de Kunstvlaai 2008, Amsterdam, Nederland) samen gebracht met materialen op de plaats zelf, Breezand, het betreft school inventaris. Met dit concept benadruk ik dat het werk subjectief is, eerder werk niet te objectiveren is, het veranderd in een nieuw werk wat eveneens tijdelijk is. Al het werk wat ik maak is subjectief en gaan onder andere inhoudelijk over het gegeven dat een absolute werkelijkheid niet bestaat. Als existentiële kunstenaar benader ik perceptie als wisselvallig.

De oude school waar ik Q-Fever heb opgebouwd bracht me tot het bevragen van het onderwijssysteem in algemene zin. Wie beslist welke theorie er wordt overgedragen op kinderen, wat is de rol van waarheid hierin en wie beslist? Een interessant detail in het klaslokaal was het raam met uitzicht in het toilet. Door dit raam kon de docent in de gaten houden wat er in het toilet gebeurde. Een vorm van controle die zich in onze huidige tijd heeft uitgebreid naar de straat. Verder behandelt de installatie Q-Fever idealisme vanuit een westers perspectief. Welk belang hechten we aan idealisme dezer dagen? Daarom verschijnt er in de grote muurschildering de tekst, alsof de leraar de kinderen de vraag stelt: "Wie wordt de volgende westerse zelfmoord terrorist?"
