For the Dutch exhibition Young Talent, eleven art academies in the Netherlands were visited. The best students from graduation year 2007 present their work at Young Talent, part of the Media Art Festival 2007.

Installation: Denial by Edwin Stolk at Young Talent, Media Art Festival 2007.

Installation Denial is an existentialistic installation. Denial shows us observations from a pre-scientific point of view, impressions from a mass media society.(Text: Nadine Bors)

Artist in residence:

The mini artist in residence project of two weeks maximum was this year taken by Young Talent participants Steef van Lent and Edwin Stolk. For two weeks they worked on new work at the festival spot Amicitia, Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. At the end of this period the work was on show at Media Art Festival 2007.

Edwin Stolk (Grad Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, The Netherlands) made an conceptual installation which dealt with subjects like mass media and mass consumption. Stolk`s work was made of materials found and collected at the exhibition spot, Amicitia. Stolk was used to work in small places so the challenge now was to create unity in an large scale installation. Subject from his research was to search for an optimal composition, compared to unforced human routines in order to create chaos. The chaotic world builds from garbage and construction detritus combined with 'dirty' tv and internet shots created a large scale installation on the second floor of the office building from four hundred square meters. An installation in which many visitors carefully and astonished tried to find their way. Lots of visitors left the installation chocked and confused, it seemed that this exactly was what the artist had in mind. (Text by Nadine Bors)

Voor de nationale tentoonstelling Jong Talent werden door de curatoren van Media Art Friesland alle elf kunstacademies in Nederland bezocht. De beste examinandi 2007 presenteren hun werk in Jong Talent onderdeel van Media Art Festival 2007.

Artist in Residence

Het mini Artist in Residence project van maximaal twee weken werd dit jaar opgevuld door Jong Talent deelnemers Steef van Lent en Edwin Stolk. Twee weken lang werkten zij aan nieuw werk in het festivalcentrum Amicitia. De producten die gemaakt zijn, werden vertoond tijdens het Media Art Festival 2007.

Edwin Stolk (alumni Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten Den Haag) werkte met het concept 'overvloed in massa media en consumptiemaatschappij.' Stolk's werk bestond uitsluitend uit materiaal, verzameld en gevonden in het Amicitia. Stolk was gewend om in kleine ruimtes te werken, maar dit keer was zijn doel om een eenheid te creëren op een zo groot mogelijk oppervlak. Zijn onderzoekspunten voor dit project waren het zoeken naar compositie, ongedwongen routine en verwarring stichten. De 'chaotische' wereld van fysiek afval en puin en de 'vuiligheid' van tv monde uit in een reusachtige installatie van 400 vierkante meter op de tweede verdieping. Een installatie waarin menig bezoeker zich voorzichtig een onbeduidende weg baande door de 'kunst van puin en massamedia'. Geschokt verlieten veel bezoekers de ruimte en dat was de exacte reactie die hij met zijn werk wilde bewerkstelligen. (Tekst Nadine Bors)
